WELCOME

Where beer once flowed Grampians Shiraz is today's hero.

Read our story.

The OLD BREWERY ROAD CELLAR DOOR & FARM LARDER is located at the historic Fountainhead Brewery residence at Armstrong near Great Western in the Grampians region of Western Victoria.  Beer, cider and other beverages were made at the property from 1859 to 1905, and while all that remains of the brewery building today is a large stone below-ground cellar, its stables (c1860) and the residence (1872) still evoke a rich history.

Today a different range of beverages and farm products are produced by our family at OLD BREWERY ROAD - premium Grampians regional wines, olive oil and red wine vinegar drawn from our vineyard and olive groves at Armstrong and nearby Mount Ararat; as well as from other local vineyards and growers.

Visitors to the Cellar Door & Farm Larder drive through a grove of mature olive trees: arriving at our tasting cube in the renovated garden of the old brewery residence.

We invite you to visit this very special place and sample our OLD BREWERY ROAD wines and farm larder products.

OUR STORY

Home of Australia’s First Danish Beer

Read our story

The property where the OLD BREWERY ROAD CELLAR DOOR & FARM LARDER is located was selected by Danish shipwright and sometime gold miner, Jens Kofoed, in 1859.  Mr Kofoed quickly realised that selling beer to thirsty miners on the Ararat goldfields would be more profitable than digging for gold, and he enlisted his younger brother and brewer, Jorgen, to help establish the Fountainhead Brewery at the confluence of the Concongella Creek and a spring fed lagoon soon known as the Brewery Creek.  They quickly built up a successful business and the brewery’s flagship brew - Colonial Malt Ale - was sold as far away as Ballarat and Hamilton.  In time the brick, timber and iron brewery reached three stories high and employed forty men; producing a wide range of beers, cider, and cordials.
